It’s never too late to start taking care of yourself.  Today men and women in their forties, fifties and sixties are able to achieve a much more youthful appearance and active lifestyle more than every before because they decided to start taking care of their health more when they hit midlife.

If you are approaching midlife and do not adjust your lifestyle habits your mind and body will not age gracefully. If you want to live agelessly you can make today the day you commit to daily physical activity and support it with healthy whole foods and a seasonal supplements routine.

Once we hit the age of thirty our metabolism, which is like your body’s engine starts to slow down by about ten percent every decade. Translated into calories, if you maintained your activity level (calories burned) you would have to cut between 100-130 daily calories for each decade to simply maintain your weight. In addition to a decreasing metabolism there are hormonal shifts that can affect muscle mass, bone density, energy levels, body fat composition and sex drive to name a few.  This makes it very important to start listening to your body and make mindful choices now to not over consume or deprive yourself of calories or cut back on physical fitness routine. Enhancing your physical health now is crucial because you’re laying the groundwork for your aging experience.

Here are some lifestyle changes that you can implement today to start looking and feeling younger with each passing year.

Adjust your nutrition.  As mentioned above, for every decade past the age of thirty your caloric intake needs to be reduced by about 100-130/day. For example a typical 1800-2000 caloric intake in your twenties or thirties would be reduced to 1700-1900 in your forties and 1600-1800 in your fifties. (*NOTE: if your physical activity dramatically increases calorie intake would need to be customized to suit)

Change your beliefs:  If you believe that midlife will make you gain ten pounds per decade, guess what? It will. You need to recognize that beliefs aren’t facts and they can change. Not allowing midlife weight gain to be a self-fulfilling prophecy will decrease your chance of heart disease, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension, breast cancer, colon cancer, fatty liver disease and osteoarthritis to name a few.

Don’t Worry Be Happy.  Reducing the level of stress effects on your body is one of the best ways to prevent weight gain and inflammation, which will in turn make you feel and look more youthful. Don’t be mad at yourself for not starting sooner, be happy with yourself for making today the best time to start making small incremental changes to make the rest of your life is the best of your life!
